Heart disease hospice care

Typically, patients with advanced-stage heart disease a cycle of decline followed by periods of recovery. Identifying signs that hospice care may be helpful involves recognizing common symptoms associated with terminal congestive heart failure (CHF).

Is it time for hospice care?

Hospice care would benefit those experiencing these symptoms:

  • The patient has advanced congestive heart failure or advanced coronary disease with frequent episodes of angina (chest pain resulting from insufficient supply of blood and oxygen to the heart).

  • The patient has an abnormal heart (because of an underlying disease) and suffers significant symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, or functional decline.

  • The patient has received optimal treatment for their condition and they are not a candidate for further surgical or medical intervention.

  • The patient has made the choice not to pursue any further specialized treatment.
